METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing gum from concrete usually depends on how long the gum has been there and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left recently and it hasn’t penetrated the surface yet, we might be able to remove it by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping the gum off with a putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a more forgiving consistency compared to a warm and sticky mess. Once the gum is frozen, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper right under the gum residue. After that we move the scraper very slowly beneath the gum and the entire piece should peel right off the concrete.

The above process is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that has turned black, or is smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water power washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we won’t use high pressure because that could ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our pressure washers never uses any more pressure than necessary to safely clean concrete. These surfaces can be damaged much easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a couple of years old. Concrete can require up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our chewing gum removal professional.
